As colonialism took over India, its trade tightened, the space within which Indian merchants could function became increasingly limited. They were barred from trading with Europe in manufactured goods, and had to export mostly raw materials and food grains - raw cotton, opium, wheat - required by the British. In order to gain more profit, their interest inclined towards different profitable products that can be gained from India. So, they hired lands at negligible costs for tea and coffee plantations and also traded in the sectors like mining. Cultivation of commercial crops including jute and indigo was also financed by the European Managing Agency.
