Farmers in Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh were among the first in India to experiment with modern farming methods, using HYV seeds and modern equipment for the growth of wheat in North India and rice in South India, which were introduced to them during the 1960s Green Revolution initiative.
The Green Revolution and the excessive use of contemporary farming techniques have exploited the natural resource base, namely the land. Farmers in these areas dug tube wells for irrigation and grew their crops with HYV seeds. Some even purchased farm machineries, such as tractors and threshers, to speed up ploughing and harvesting.
