General Dyer stormed the area, blocked the exits, and opened fire on the crowd, killing hundreds. On April 13, 1919, a large audience gathered at the enclosed grounds of Jallianwalla Bagh. Some opposed the harsh new policies of the government. Others had come to celebrate the traditional Baisakhi festival. Many villagers were unaware that martial law had been imposed because they were from outside the city. The British troops entered the grounds and opened fire on the crowd on the orders of General Dyer. Dyer’s purpose for such torture, he later stated, was to create a moral effect, instilling fear and awe in the minds of Satyagrahis. In addition, this was an attempt to repress those against colonial rule.
