1)      Since its foundation, the country has recognised Hindi as its official language. It is not because Hindi speakers have an advantage over persons who speak other languages. The vast majority of the population speaks Hindi, the official language.
2)      Hindi is also the official language of India because it is understood by the majority of people who speak other languages. However, only about 40% of Indians can communicate in it. The Constitution included 21 more languages to its list of Scheduled Languages in order to preserve the rights of other linguistic communities.
