Hunting big animals became a sport even though the forest regulations took away people's traditional rights to hunt. For many years, India's nobles and the court have practised tiger and other animal hunts. Princes and emperors enjoying a hunt can be seen in many Mughal paintings. However, during the time of colonial control, hunting was conducted on a far larger scale, which led to the near-extinction of several species. Large animals were viewed by the British as indicators of an unruly, barbaric culture. They thought the British would civilise India by slaughtering ferocious creatures. They offered incentives for killing tigers, wolves, and other huge creatures on the justification that doing so constituted a threat to cultivators.
