Forests are cut down and burned as part of the shifting agriculture process. The seeds were only sown in these ashes, and the crop was gathered in October or November. The area was used intermittently for a few years before being left fallow for 12 to 18 years to allow the forests to regrow. There were several crops grown. On these plots, a variety of crops are produced. Millets may be used in central Africa and India, manioc in Brazil, and maize and beans in other regions of Latin America.
