Insectivorous plants trap and digest insects and other small animals to obtain the nitrogen  that is required for their growth. Most plants absorb enough nitrogen from nitrates in the soil but as  the insectivorous plants live in nitrogen deficient soils, they need to fulfill their nitrogen demand by  digesting the prey instead.
