During the period of intense lactation following parturition (childbirth), the mother will have high levels of prolactin. Prolactin is responsible for stimulating milk production in mammary glands and also inhibits the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus. GnRH stimulates the release of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) from the anterior pituitary gland.

When GnRH levels decrease due to high prolactin levels, it results in reduced FSH and LH secretion. FSH and LH are essential hormones for the development and release of eggs (ovulation) from the ovaries. Therefore, during intense lactation, ovulation is suppressed due to the inhibitory effect of prolactin on GnRH, which subsequently decreases FSH and LH levels.
