Rights play a major role in democracy, and they constitute the very basis of it. Rights keep democratic institutions in check by giving necessary freedoms to the people. As democracy is a form of Government in which people elect their representatives who run the Government and formulate policies and programs for the welfare of the citizens, it is essential that the people also have the right to criticise the Government and its policies.
