Sri Lanka gained its independence from the British in 1948. The leaders of the Sinhala community attempted to take advantage of their numerical majority as soon as the nation attained independence and a democratic government was constituted. They dominated the government and introduced majoritarian policies to establish Sinhala supremacy. They also successfully pressured the government to declare Sinhala as the only official language and give preference to Sinhala candidates for government jobs and university positions. A new constitution also established that Buddhism, the main religion of the Sinhala majority, must be protected and promoted by the State. In light of these policies, Sri Lankans Tamil felt alienated as the government gave no recognition to their language or culture.
