This was because the Roman church was discomforted by the questioning of the faith by the popular religious literature. For example, in the sixteenth century, Menocchio, an Italian miller, began reading books available in his neighbourhood and his reinterpretation of the message of the Bible enraged the Roman Catholic Church. Troubled about the influence of popular readings and problems of faith, the Roman Church imposed rigorous controls on publishers and booksellers in 1558 and began keeping an Index of Prohibited Books.
