Detailed Solution

Both statements (A) and (R ) are true.
Sri Lanka became independent in 1948, following which the leaders of the Sinhala Community established their dominance in the democratically tagged government by their majority, intending to develop Sinhala supremacy. An act was passed in 1956 in Sri Lankan legislation to adopt Sinhala as the only sanctioned language of the country overlooking the Tamil language. Most Sinhala speakers were Buddhists. So Buddhism was promoted. In comparison, Tamil speakers are Muslim or Hindu.
Statement (R) is the correct explanation of (A). In jobs and educational openings also, Sinhala speakers were preferred. Sri Lankan Tamils were disallowed levels of political rights. These majoritarian ways led to disaffection among the Sri Lankan Tamils.
