Detailed Solution

Both assertion and reason are true, and the reason is the correct explanation of assertion. Sri Lanka gained independence in 1948. The leaders of the Sinhala community dominated the democratically elected government as they formed the majority in the country to establish Sinhala supremacy. An act was passed in 1956 to recognise Sinhala as the country's only official language. Meanwhile, the language of the Sri Lankan Tamils is Tamil, which was overlooked. Most Sinhala speakers were Buddhists, so Buddhism was promoted. In jobs and educational opportunities as well, Sinhala speakers were preferred. Sri Lankan Tamils were denied equal political rights. These majoritarian steps led to alienation among the Sri Lankan Tamils. This led to tensions and conflicts between the two major social groups.
