Waterways are the cheapest mode of transport. They are also eco-friendly, fuel-efficient and cause less damage to the environment. Waterway transport includes ships, ferries, cargo, and boats. They are preferred while carrying heavy and bulky goods. These waterways are declared national waterways. Some examples of national waterways are NW-1, Allahabad to Haldia on the Ganga river system and NW-2, Sadiya to Dhubri on the Brahmaputra river. Ninety-five per cent of India's foreign trade is moved by sea and makes up 68 per cent in terms of value.
