Reaction of ethyl chloride with KNO2,

C2H5Br+KNO2C2H5NO2+KBr

Being ionic in nature, KNO2 gives K+and NO2 -. This NO2 -attack as a nucleophile from the carbon side to the ethyl chloride to give an alkyl nitrite as a final product.

Reaction of ethyl chloride with AgNO2,

C2H5Br+AgNO2C2H5ONO+AgBr

Being covalent in nature, AgNO2 does not give Ag+and NO2-. So, AgNO2 attack as a nucleophile from the nitrogen side to the ethyl chloride to give nitroethane as a final product. Also, since NO2-can donate electrons from both sides (from nitrogen and oxygen), it is an ambident ion.

Thus, both assertion and reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of assertion
