According to M.O theory, the electronic configuration of Nitrogen  (${\mathrm{N}}_2$ ) molecule is as given below:

${\left(\mathrm{\sigma }1\mathrm{s}\right)}^2{\left({\sigma }^{*}1s\right)}^2{\left(\sigma 2s\right)}^2{\left({\sigma }^{*}2s\right)}^2{\left(\pi 2p_y\right)}^2{\left(\sigma 2p_x\right)}^2$

The M.O diagram of nitrogen molecule is shown below:

From the above diagram,

Number of bonding electrons in $\left({\mathrm{N}}_2\right)$ molecule = 8

Number of anti bonding electrons in $\left({\mathrm{N}}_2\right)$ molecule = 2

Bond order of $\left({\mathrm{N}}_2\right)molecule=\frac{1}{2}(N_b-N_a)$

$=\frac{8-2}{2}=3$

In ${\mathrm{N}}_2$ molecule, the number of bonding electrons are not equal to number of anti bonding electrons. Hence the reason is incorrect.
