Concept- Carbon , graphite and fullerene are the allotropes of pure carbon. Although they are made up of only carbon atoms, still they differ from each other in terms of structure, physical properties and chemical properties.
Now, in diamond, each carbon atom is covalently bonded to 4 other carbon atoms, hence carbon is sp3 hybridised in a diamond.
Diamond is strong because it is formed by the covalent bonds which provide them strength. Due to high strength it is hard to break it as the bonds are stronger formed. But Graphite has a layered structure in which carbons are arranged in hexagonal rings. These layers are held together by the weaker forces.
Thus, both assertion and reason are correct but reason is not the correct explanation for the assertion statement.
Hence, the correct answer is 2.
