The East India Company appointed a paid servant called Gomastha, and it was a step taken to assert a monopoly on the right to trade. To have more direct control over the weavers, the Company aimed to abolish the current textile traders and brokers. It assigned Gomasthas, or hired servants, to watch weavers, collect supplies, and test textile quality. Once an order was placed, weavers were granted loans to purchase raw materials. Those who took out loans were required to deliver the fabric they created only to the Gomasthas. They couldn't take it to another trader.
