Nationalism ideas were also developed through the process of revitalising Indian mythology. In the late nineteenth century in India, patriots began recording bards' songs and visiting villages to collect traditional songs and legends. These myths, they believed, gave a true picture of traditional culture that was corrupted and damaged by external forces. It was important to preserve this human culture in order to acquire one’s nationality and restore a sense of pride in one’s past.
