The Lahore Congress formally demanded "Purna Swaraj," or complete independence for India, in December 1929, when Jawaharlal Nehru served as President. It was decided that January 26th, 1930, would be observed as Freedom Day, at which time people would commit to fighting for unrestricted independence. The "Declaration of Independence" vow was written by Mahatma Gandhi in 1930 and it reflected the core of the American Declaration of Independence, whereas the Poorna Swaraj Resolution was written by Jawaharlal Nehru. Following this vow, the Indian National Congress proclaimed January 26, 1930, as Independence Day.
