With the spread of the non-cooperation movement from cities to the countryside, it became different with the thought of different scenarios of the movement. Gandhiji withdrew the Non-Cooperation movement because it turned violent. And he felt that satyagrahis needed to be properly trained for the mass struggle. The reason was the incident at Chauri Chaura in the Gorakhpur district on February 4, 1922. The group of protesters clashed with the police and burned the police station, which led to the deaths of 22 police officers. After hearing this, Mahatma Gandhi criticised this incident because he was against violence.
