With the concept of swaraj, not all social groups were influenced. One such group was the 'untouchables' of the nation. They called themselves Dalits, or oppressed. The Congress ignored Dalits for a long time to not offend the high-caste Hindu sanatanis. Mahatma Gandhi felt and declared that without the elimination of untouchability, swaraj was not possible. Gandhi called them Harijan, or children of God. For the elimination of untouchability, Gandhi organised a satyagraha for the entrance of untouchables into temples, schools, and access to public property. For example, he cleaned toilets and performed the work of bhangi (the sweepers) and asked upper castes to change their minds and hearts.
