Let the speed in still water be x mph and the speed of the currently be y mph.

 

Speed of upstream =(x−y)

 

Speed of downstream =(x+y)

 

According to the question,

12x-y-12x+y=6 Or, 12x+12y-12x+12yx2-y2=6 Or, 24y=6(x2-y2) or, x2-y2=4y or, x2=4y+y2..........(i)

Again,

12(2x-y)-12(2x+y)=1

or, 24x+12y-24x+12y=(4 x2-y2) or, 24y=(4 x2-y2) or, x2=24y+y224 ........(ii)

Comparing equations (i) and (ii)

4y+y2=24y+y224

Or, 16y+4 y2= 24y+ y2 Or, 3y2=8y Or, y=83=223 mph

The speed of the current is 223 MPH
