Detailed Solution

At Swamimalai, Sthapatis made exquisite bronze idols.
Sculptors or Sthapatis at Swamimalai in Thanjavur were renowned for the tall, ornamental bell metal lamps and exquisite bronze idols they made. Bronze is an alloy, and it contains tin and copper. Bell metal comprises more tin, unlike other types of bronze. It is due to this reason that bell metal produces bell-like sounds. Bronze statues made during the Chola reign were products of the “lost wax” technique. An image was first made of wax. After covering it with clay and allowing it to dry, it was heated. A tiny hole made in the clay cover provides the opening for the molten wax to seep out. Next, molten metal was poured through the hole into the clay mould. After the metal cooled and solidified, the artisan removed the clay cover carefully. Lastly, the image was cleaned and polished.
