At the Calcutta session of the Congress, Gandhiji convinced Congress leaders to support the Khilafat and Swaraj.
The potential of a coordinated mass movement on the Khilafat issue was brought up with Mahatma Gandhi by a new generation of Muslim leaders, including the brothers Muhammad Ali and Shaukat Ali. Gandhiji regarded this as a chance to unite the nation's movements and include Muslims. He persuaded other leaders at the Congress' Calcutta session in September 1920 to launch a non-cooperation movement in favor of the Khilafat and Swaraj.
