At the beginning of the 20th century, the vast majority of Russian people worked in the Agricultural sector.
By the twentieth century, agriculturists made up most of the bulk of the Russian population. Agriculture provided a living for almost 85% of the Russian empire's populace. This was a larger proportion than in other European countries. For example, the share was between 40 and 50 percent in France and Germany. Cultivators in the empire produced both for the market and for their consumption, and Russia was a significant grain exporter. On the other hand, the industry was only present in small places. Some major manufacturing centres were St Petersburg and Moscow. Most of the work was done by craftsmen, while enormous factories coexisted with craft workshops.
