The first spinning and weaving mill was set up in 1854 in Bombay. Bombay Spinning and Weaving Company was the first cotton mill which was established in July 1854. Production at the mill started on February 7th, 1856, under the supervision of British engineers and skilled cotton operatives. The mill helped Bombay to grow as an important port for exporting cotton as a raw material from India to England and China. The growth of the cotton mills demanded heavy manpower, which was a good employment opportunity for the poor people in India.
