ATP synthase is an integral part of complex V. It utilizes the energy released during the electron transport system in synthesizing ATP. This complex consists of two major components, ${\mathrm{F}}_1$ and  ${\mathrm{F}}_0$. F₁ is ATP synthase and F₀ forms the proton channel for facilitated diffusion of protons from perimitochondrial space to matrix.
