Detailed Solution

Awadh was annexed by Lord Dalhousie.
In 1856, Lord Dalhousie invaded Awadh and incorporated it into the British Empire. In 1801, the Nawab of Awadh was compelled to cede more than half of his domain to the Company because he was unable to pay for the "auxiliary forces". Later, in 1858, the British annexed Awadh on the grounds that it had been improperly managed. It is widely believed that the Doctrine of Lapse was used to acquire Awadh (1856). However, under the guise of a poor government, Lord Dalhousie annexed it. Through this approach, the Company increased its annual revenue by around four million pounds sterling. The primary pretext was that the ruler did not exercise their authority effectively.
