Caste is a peculiar feature of Indian society. It is an ancient division of labour where occupational skills were passed on from generation to generation. Initially, it was flexible, but later on, it was made rigid and extreme. It made the occupational division hereditary and allowed the formation of marital relationships among the same castes. It exploited and discriminated against the lower castes and excluded the outcaste, treating them unequally like untouchables. Jyotibha Phule, Periyar, and B.R. Ambedkar worked to establish a society free from caste inequalities.
