Detailed Solution

Peasants in Awadh were headed by sanyasi Baba Ramchandra, who had previously worked as an indentured labourer in Fiji. The protests in this area were directed against talukdars and landlords who sought extortionately high rent and several other cesses from peasants. At their landlords' farms, peasants were required to work for free and perform menial tasks. They were routinely evicted as tenants, which prevented them from acquiring any rights to the leased land. They also had no security of tenure. Reduced taxes, the end of beggarly behaviour, and a social boycott of repressive landlords were demands of the peasant movement. Panchayats organised Nai Dhobi Bandhs in numerous locations to deny landowners the services of barbers and washermen.
