Baba Ramchandra led the peasants' non-cooperation movement in Awadh. Baba Ramchandra, a sanyasi who had previously worked as an indentured labourer in Fiji, led the peasants in Awadh. In Awadh, there was a movement against talukdars and landlords who sought outrageously high rents and a variety of additional cesses from peasants. At the farms of their landlords, peasants were required to work for free and do labour without any payment, known as 'begar'.
