Timur was the ancestor of the Mughals on their father’s side, and Umar Shaikh was Babur’s father. The Mughals embraced their Timurid ancestry because they were incredibly proud of Timur, who had conquered Delhi in 1398. However, they did not want to trace their ancestry to Genghis Khan, the Mongol ruler on their mother’s side, as his name was associated with innumerable massacres. Thus, they found it distasteful to be addressed as Mongol or Mughal.
