Bachchu Manjhi came from a village in Bihar.
Bachchu Manjhi was a mason from the Bihar state. His wife and three children live in the village with him. He does not own any land. He had difficulty finding continuous masonry work in the village, and the family's income was meagre. He bought an old bike rickshaw in the city and paid for it in instalments. He and his companions remained in a rented room. They work for a nearby factory. Although Manjhi's family relies only on the money he sends, his wife occasionally receives well-paying agricultural labour.
