Detailed Solution

Bahadur Shah Zafar lived at Red Fort in Delhi. Due to the emergence of smaller kingdoms and weak successors, the Mughal empire faced a downfall after the 18th century. When the British arrived, the Mughals were already facing a downfall. The aged emperor Bahadur Shah was a weak ruler. He was kept at Red Fort with pensions being provided to him. The Britishers declared that Bahadur Shah would be the last Mughal ruler, and the Mughal rule would be removed after his death.
