Bakht Khan was a soldier from Bareilly. He was raised at Bijnor, the capital of Rohilkhand, and later enlisted in the army of the East India Company as a subedar, the senior local commanding officer. Additionally, he spent 40 years as a member of the Bengal Horse Artillery and participated in the First Anglo-Afghan War. In the early years of the anti-British Indian Mutiny (1857–58), Bakht Khan led insurgent soldiers. He was born c. 1797 and passed away in 1859.
