Bakht Khan was a soldier from Bareilly. He was raised at Bijnor, the capital of Rohilkhand, and later enlisted in the army of the East India Company as a subedar, the senior local commanding officer. Additionally, he spent 40 years as a member of the Bengal Horse Artillery and participated in the First Anglo-Afghan War. In the early years of the anti-British Indian Mutiny (1857–58), Bakht Khan led insurgent soldiers. He was born c. 1797 and passed away in 1859. He gained fame among the military leaders of the uprising when he was assigned charge of a sizable battle army that had arrived in Delhi..
