Bastar is located in present-day Chattisgarh. It shares its borders with Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Maharashtra. Its central part lies on a plateau, northern on the Chhattisgarh plain, and southern on the Godavari plain. The river Indrawati flows across Bastar from east to west. Various communities reside in Bastar- Maria and Muria Gonds, Dhurwas, Bhatras and Halbas. Their languages are different, but they share common customs and beliefs. They look after the earth in return for providing them land by making some offerings at each agricultural festival. They organise one big hunt every year, where the headmen of villages in a pargana (cluster of villages) meet and discuss issues of concern, including forests.
