Bastar people believe the Earth gave each village land.
The southernmost area of the state of Chhattisgarh is where Bastar is located. Among those found in Bastar, Maria and Muria Gonds, Dhurwas, Bhatras, and other communities. Despite speaking different languages, they share the same values and customs. They believe that the Earth granted each community its land in exchange for caring for the planet through their festival gifts. In addition to the Earth, they revere the spirits of the river, the forest, and the mountain. Each town respects its natural resources within its confines since it knows its boundaries. They must pay a small fee called ``devsari" if they want to harvest wood from another community. Some towns hire guards to guard their forests, and each household contributes grains to the effort.
