Detailed Solution

Bastille was hated by all because it stood for the despotic power of the kings. Bastille was a kind of fortress in the eastern part of Paris that was being used, by 1789, as a royal prison and an armoury. On the morning of 14 July 1789, the prison was stormed by a mob, releasing the prisoners and seizing ammunition. Although the prison held only seven prisoners at the time of the attack, it had come to be associated with the tyranny and despotism of the monarch because sometimes it was used to hold prisoners who went against the king's wishes. People stormed Bastille, and its fall came to symbolise the end of the monarchy, the end of the Old Regime and the beginning of the French Revolution.
