Bats use ultrasonic waves to catch prey.
Bats emit high-frequency ultrasonic waves while flying and listen to the echoes produced by the reflection of their squeaks from the objects in their path. Bats can estimate the distance of an object in their path based on how long it takes for the echo to be heard. Bats search for their prey at night by the method of echolocation.
Ultrasonic waves are high-frequency waves. Based on frequency, waves are divided into three categories.
• Infrasonic waves – waves of frequency less than 20 Hz
• Audible waves - waves of frequency more than 20 Hz but less than 20,000 Hz.
• Ultrasonic waves - waves of frequency more than 20,000 Hz.
