The caste system has existed in India since early times. It has a long history of inequality and discrimination against certain sections of society. The people on the receiving hand of untouchability were denied many services, such as transportation facilities, medical facilities, education, and even access to community facilities such as wells and places of worship. Many people realised that such practices were unjust and that equality could not be achieved if these practices were not abolished. After a long struggle by leaders such as Dr Ambedkar and others, untouchability was abolished by the Constitution of India. The government has recognised the long history of inequality and discrimination and has made special provisions to uplift these sections of society.
