Before 1856, Commercial Forestry was considered important in India.
During British rule, Commercial Forestry grew in importance. Oak woodlands in England were rapidly disappearing by the early nineteenth century. The Royal Navy faced a lack of timber as a result of this. The English Ships could not be built without a steady supply of strong and durable wood. Without ships, Imperial power could not be protected or maintained. Commercial Forestry was regarded as essential in India before 1856. By the 1820s, Search Parties had been sent to India to investigate the country's forest riches. These parties gave Commercial Forestry in India the green light. Within a decade, significant amounts of timber were being shipped from India and trees were being felled on a massive scale.
