A similar incident occurred in 1817 at a location called Khurda, much earlier than the one in 1857. It would be instructive to study that event and reflect on how resentment against British colonial policies had been building up in various parts of the country since the early nineteenth century. At the beginning of the 19th century, Khurda, a small kingdom founded in the late 16th century in the southeastern part of Odisha, was a populous and well-cultivated territory consisting of 105 garhs, 60 large and 1109 small villages. Its king, Raja Birakishore Dev, had previously had to relinquish control of four Parganas and supervise the Jagannath Temple.
