Detailed Solution

Before the French Revolution, France's society was known as a society of estates.
France's society was divided into three estates before the French Revolution. The First Estate was made up of clergy, the Second Estate was made up of aristocracy, and the Third Estate comprised commoners. Peasants accounted for roughly 90% of the population. Only a small percentage of them, however, owned the property they farmed. Nobles, the Church, and other wealthy members of the First Estate owned over 60% of the land. People of the first two estates, the clergy, and the nobility, were born with particular advantages. The most significant of these was the freedom from paying state taxes. Feudal privileges were also granted to nobles.
