Detailed Solution

Before the French Revolution, French society was divided into three estates. The clergy and nobility, who made up the first two estates, were born with certain privileges. The exemption from paying state taxes was the most significant of these. Feudal privileges were also held by the nobles. They also demanded payments from the peasants, known as feudal dues. Peasants were required to provide services to the lord by working in his home and fields, enlisting in the army, or helping to construct roads. The Church also levied taxes on the peasants, known as tithes.
