Detailed Solution

Before the invention of the printing press, reading was restricted to elite groups. Books were available in handwritten versions, which cost an exorbitant amount and became an item of luxury, only to be afforded and owned by the elite. As a result, the habit or practice of reading was restricted to the elite. This scenario changed with the coming of the print culture. Books became easily available to wider sections of the population as the printing press allowed books to be produced much faster and on a mass scale, thus reducing their costs drastically. The book publishers also found different ways to attract a much larger group of consumers of printed books, like publishing ballads, folk tales, and short stories. The result was the emergence of a new reading public.
