Begum Hazrat Mahal was the wife of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah.
The Begum of Avadh, Begum Hazrat Mahal, who had crowned her infant son, Birjis Kadr, as the Nawab of Awadh, spearheaded the insurrection against the Doctrine of Lapse at Lucknow. Her real name was Muhammadi Khanum. She became the regent of Awadh in 1857–1858. After the British occupied Awadh in 1856, Wajid Ali Shah was forced into exile in Calcutta. With her son by her side, Begum Hazrat Mahal stayed in Lucknow and quickly assumed control of the rebel activities.
