Bengal Gazette, a weekly magazine, was edited by James Augustus Hickey. The article was mostly tabloid, and Hickey used it to mock various East India Company officials with whom he had personal differences. Initially, the newspaper took a neutral stance on these issues. But then he changed his mind and started mocking the Company and its officials. He often used allusions and fabricated names to refer to real personalities. Colonial officials widely read his articles in Calcutta and did not appreciate his writings. He accused the East India Company of corruption and inefficiency.
