Detailed Solution

The Bengal Gazette was a weekly magazine edited by Augustus Hickey and commenced publication in the 1780s. The Bengal Gazette was a British private enterprise with no influence or interference from the colonial government. It often became problematic for the government as well. Through the Bengal Gazette, the practice of English printing started in India. It advertised the sale of enslaved people, imports, and many other ventures, and even the gossip about the senior colonial officials in India. It prompted Lord W. Hastings, the Governor-general, to prosecute him and to bring the magazine under government control.
