Bengal's eventual decline in Indigo production happened in 1859.
The Blue Rebellion, which began in March 1859 and was headed by a sizable group of Bengali ryots (peasants), was sparked by their refusal to produce or develop Indigo and their use of weapons to assault Indigo manufacturing facilities and units. They also vowed to make no progress in the development of Indigo. They believed they were supported against the planters by the local zamindars and town headmen. Headmen organised the Indigo workers and engaged in combat with the Lathiyals in several cities. The indigo workers anticipated the British government's backing against the planters. The local labourers interpreted the Lieutenant Governor's presence at the time as a show of solidarity.
Officer Ashley Eden in Barasat published a note urging the ryots (labourers from indigo contracts) to be careful. The British government sent in the military to protect the farmer from ambushes and took action against the growth of Indigo. The British administration declared that the ryots did not benefit from indigo production (peasants). When the British government demanded that the ryots (labourers) fulfilled their current contracts and forbade the manufacturing of Indigo in any way, indigo production in India came to an abrupt halt. Since the demonstration was non-violent, it is considered to have been successful.
